New dementia care guide launched

Care Forum Wales’ dementia care advisor, Stephen Ford, has released a new guide to dementia care to help carers deal with difficult situations that sometimes arise when dealing with older people with dementia.

He has called his guide ‘A CHAMPIONS’, which stands for Assessment of Challenging and Management Problems Initiating Options for New Solutions (Dementia Care).

The guide is free to download from our website HERE.

The guide offers a range of scenarios which can trigger difficult behaviour from dementia sufferers - and offers a series of ideas and solutions to deal with this.

Stephen is managing director of Pembroke Nursing Homes in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, and he has 37 years’ experience in caring for vulnerable adults.

He runs CFW’s All Wales Dementia Group and is a member of local and regional dementia care interest groups.

He said: “Switched-on care providers should know when anti-psychotic medication is of little therapeutic value. In exceptional circumstances, their use should be time-limited and never the first choice for managing difficult behaviour.”

Stephen can be contacted at pembrokehomes@aol.com
